Wooden Board Day number 10

We got lucky again this year with a classic Gold Coast winters day 26c and a small swell that grew as the tide came in. A smaller gathering than some days in the past but no less passion and a very high standard of boards. Lots of questions and sharing of ideas was the order of the day. Check out below some of what was on show on the day.

Classic day as things come to life

These two young guys from Byron Bay never got out of their wet suits all day and surfed for hours on all sorts of wood craft. I bet they slept well Sunday night.

On this Sunday

The 10th ANNUAL WOODEN SURFBOARD DAY

Sunday August the 5th is set down as the date for this year's Wooden Surfboard Day to be held in the park at Currumbin on the Gold Coast as in the past years.

We look forward to meeting other budding wooden board builders and the projects that they have been working on through the year. Each year peoples experience grows and the level of skills and finish of boards is a testament to the long hours and effort being put in.

The day is a gathering of like minded people who enjoy being challenged by spending countless hours in the shed building wooden boards. A great time to meet others with the same passion and to see what they have been up to.

If you don't build boards but want to find out more you could not be in a better place to ask all the questions you want. There are many ways to build a wooden board and they will all be on display on the day.

So bring your boards a picnic lunch and go for a surf. The Alley in winter is often at it's best for a slide across the banks on a wooden board. And there is nothing better than being on one you built yourself.

Looking forward to catching up with old faces and welcoming new ones.

Another great board from Nathaniel Grey

I was looking forward to catching up with Nathan again as he always has an interesting board or project on the way. Sadly he will not be able to make it up to Currumbin next week, work has got a bit to busy to be able to take the time off.So he thought he would share his latest project.5' 8" asym.

"The build is a styrofoam core or to be more precise an old cool-light i found chucked out in the street, so a bit of up-cycling on my part"
"I vac bagged 6mm balsa skins to the top and bottom and built up the 30mm thick rails with 5mm strips"

"Glassing is 4oz top with a 4oz nexus/basalt deck patch and 4oz bottom, i used entropy epoxy bio resin"

"The fins are foiled from 9mm birch ply

Bottom contours are a bit of roll through the nose that then blends into a deep single concave between the fins and a bit of a chime on the rails"

2 weeks today to this years Wooden Board Day

Yes guys only two weeks to this years wooden board day our tenth to date. Looking forward to what everyone has been up to and seeing old faces and meeting new people. I even have Esterno coming out from Italy to meet other board builders. I never quite know who may be there on the day so it makes it interesting. But I am sure that we will have a great day. Any question give me a call or email me.

The second edition of the European Wooden Surfboard Day is on! 24th-25th August, Playa de Berria, Cantabria, Spain.

After the amazing response and feedback from all the participants in the first European Wooden Meet, we’ve decided to go for a second edition. We must do it! The vibe and enthusiasm that reigned at the beach park was unforgettable, with 28 wooden builders from 11 countries and 80 eco surfboards on display. It was all about love, passion and commitment. At the Wooden Meet we demonstrated that things can be done in a much responsible and greener way. If the surboard manufacturing industry does not follow is not due to lack of alternatives!
