Wooden Boards in Belgium

Philippe Martens of Sinum Surfboards builds wooden boards in Oostende, Belgium. He also conducts board building classes and custom builds boards.
 Nice fresh CNC cut frames
They go together so well
 Clean and tidy

It is interesting that he finishes his hollow wooden boards with Lanolin which I think is great to see. As I love using Lanolin myself. He also glasses some as well.

He has a nice range of designs
A great range of boards built in his classes.

Build your favorite board

Alan Copelin loved his Robert August "What I Ride " model so much he decided to build one in wood. And then while on a surf trip to Costa Rica he met up with Robert who gave him a logo to use on his wooden board.

Paulownia in Germany

Earlier this year I had a visit from Fritz from Berlin, who's family is involved in  Paulownia plantations in Germany and Switzerland. He wanted to send back some sample wooden boards for the company to display in their corporate offices in Zurich.

Alan's special project

"Here is a special project I recently finished. I was asked to make something special for my nieces wedding . Its a coffee table based on the shape of a Channel Island biscuit . I had all the guests sign a diary then that went to a graphic artist who transfered them onto rice paper and glasser laminated it onto the deck . Abalone shell inlay on the nose block . Table done in pacific maple .
Cheers Alan Copelin."

Four Day wooden board building classes

BYWATER WOODEN SURFBOARDS –NEW 4-DAY CLASSES

Stuart Bywater has been running hollow wooden surfboard classes for four years now and this year he has changed up the program so he can run four x  four-day classes.

“Really its like a four-day escape or holiday for most or the guys as they make the plan to take the Thursday to Sunday off and indulge in making their own wooden board - range from a 5'2" to 7'2” Fish,
or we have four longboards to chose from and they can all be made from 8’ to 10' and anything in between. We have many deck patterns to pick from and as timber is natural they are never the same - making every board a one-off.”

You chose which board you want.
You glue and assemble your board.
You shape your rails.
You shape your nose and tail.
You decide on the rocker.
You glue the desks on.
You decide on fin placement.
We all talk board designs.
We all talk surfing.
We all help each other.
We have so much stoke going on.

 - Stuart Bywater

Next class will run from August 25th to 28th.

Each day from 8am-5pm
Full assembly and gluing of frame
Glueing the top and bottom skins
Vacuum bagging your board
Sanding (ready to glass).

Last class was booked out quickly so if you are interested please contact ASAP

Amazing art on wood by James Robertson - "Bound By Sea"

All this done by hand by the very talented James Roberts from Sydney. I hope he can make it to the Wooden Board Day. He is off to the Haleiwa Arts Festival in July to share his art and skills. We wish him well.

He is pretty handy at making boards to dress up as well.
 Pretty wood

Wooden Board Day 2016 - Sunday 7th August

This years Wooden Board Day will be Sunday 7th of August and we will have an open forum discussion with guest speakers Tom Wegener and Stuart Bywater at around 11am. We can find out what Tom has been up to, what projects he has been working on and what is in the pipeline for him. Stuart is a fine furniture designer and maker as well as a great teacher in the art of building wooden surfboards through his classes he conducts throughout the year. I am sure he has also learnt much from all the questions that arise in teaching board building. It will be interesting to hear Stuarts stories.

A great time to share your projects, learn from others and ask all those questions from others who have learnt the hard way before you need to go there. Bring your boards, go for a surf, brake out the picnic lunch with the family in the park and soak up the day.
The day is a non competitive gathering of like minded people who enjoy building and riding wooden surfboards.

We are different...  " We are a splinter Group"
