Greg's new projects
Greg Wheeldon , just sent me these shots of one of his latest projects .... "I have been busy in the workshop. Attached are some images of an 8’ Mal just finished.
I have titled it the “Off Cut Series”, as I had some off cuts of paulownia lying around, and I wanted make up a board from these pieces. I have taped off and stained the paulownia in two colours to add interest, and inset some strips to separate the colours.
Pretty nice result.
I have stuck with wooden board tradition and made a fish-bone frame, with 6mm paulownia skins, and glass-on fin. Plywood and cork rails add a darker coloured rail. The inter-layer in the ply is a white pine, so you get these parallel white lines running down the rails. I added a triple inner-stringer to the back half, under your feet, to add strength to the deck.
I used a wood preserver epoxy resin, which is impregnated with anti-fungal and wood preserves. It is as thin as water, and soaks into the paulownia and western red cedar, but still gives a full gloss finish. A light sand between coats, and no glass matt, it gives a good gloss finish, but is very thin and light. The finished board weighs about 6KGs, which is light for an 8 footer.
I will bring this one, plus a couple of others down to the Wooden Board Day in August."

Dumble Surfboards move to New Zealand
"Dumble Surfboards are designed and hand crafted by Simon Dumble who grew
up on the beaches of New Zealand, Simon created his first board, a 12'
long board, when he was just 16. It has always been a dream of his to
combine his fine woodworking skills with his love of surfing. After
moving to Alberta, Canada,
where the winters are long and the ocean very far away, Simon created
his second board. The next summer, he jumped in the car, grabbed the
thickest wet suit he could find and took it for a test drive in Tofino, British Columbia. The result of that roady is now Dumble Surfboards."
Simon has now seen the light and moved back to New Zealand to Ohope and started building hollow wooden boards again.
He builds them start to finish himself , so if you are after a nice looking board you should get hold of him :

Nathan's hollow Balsa Simmons
It has been a long time between boards for Nathan Grey from Sydney, but here is his latest creation.
"It is built from some really light weight balsa, board weighs in under 3kg’s. I glass it with entropy resin, 4oz bottom, and 4 + 4oz 2/3rd deck patch. The finish coat is a satin auto acrylic spray, nice fast finish and does not get scratched up easy.
Dimensions are 5,6”- 20,3/4”-2,3/8”, bottom shape is subtle hull entry blending into a single concave that runs between the fins, with a bevelled rail.
All I need now, is some surf."

A work of art
Another great looking board by Tony Crimmins coming together. The care and attention to detail that Tony puts in to each and every board is on another level and the end result is a work of art.
Dennis at Woody Logic back making boards
A nice new 7 ft fish from Dennis." It's been wet sanded and polished out. I'm pleased with the overall
finish. The polyester is a lot easier to work with in a lot of
respects. The board weight is about a pound maybe two more than the foam
one. This board is a lot stronger. I loved working with the balsa and
cedar combo."
Lots of detail
If anyone is interested the board it will be at the Surfari Surf Shop here
in Ormond Beach, FL. he open for custom orders if anyone is
interested.

Stavros Xan's new work shop in Greece
Stavros has just completed his new work shop in Athens Greece to build wooden boards. He is a passionate man and loves experimenting with his designs. It looks like he has a great setup to build his boards
This is from his blog : "SX Wooden Surfboards began in the backyard of a
home minutes from the waves in Santa Marina, Athens,Greece. Stav has
combined his love of board sports with a passion for wooden
boat-building techniques to create works of art for riding waves that
have less impact on the environment and more positive impact on your
surfing. The beauty of SX Wooden Surfboards lies in the blend of softwoods, the artful patterns naturally produced by the wood itself. In the future, SX Wooden Surfboards will continue to build custom dream boards and develop new surfboard shapes in collaboration with our customers."
Stavros enjoys designing and building new models to add to his quiver. Check them out Here
Just goes to show there are people building wooden boards all over the world in some unlikely places.

Adams first wooden board
Adam lives on the Sunshine Coast and builds hi tech down hill skate boards using various laminates and epoxy vacuum bagged together. So he ended up with an aray of various timber laminates. I designed and got the blank cut for him. As you can see he has pieced together a number of laminates to make up his deck and bottom skins.
All the bits in the bag and doing its thing
Bagged and trimmed ready to add the rail band laminates
There are many ways to get those rail bands on and here is a new one.
Well they came out nice and tight so it did the trick.
All coming together
Applying the epoxy to seal the deal
Looking good
Boxes in
Always good to get out there and have a crack on a board you built.
