"The Super Nug" by Timberline Surfboards

Raphael Wolfe from Timberline Surfboards just sent me these pics to share of a new shape they have come up with, The Super Nug. It is 5ft 7" and basically a fish with a rounded tail. V single to double concave with performance rails. This one is going to be set up as a quad.Raphael is the wood man in this board building venture. The boards are shaped in foam by Ryan Lovelace who has his own brand - Point Concept. The Raphael goes to it with Paulownia and other timber to create their distinctive boards. With luck we could see Raphael at the Wooden Board Day in August.

Tony Crimmins with a new board under way

Tony started with setting out the outline on his work bench and then setting up the 8mm ( laminated 2 x 4mm) Paulownia stringer. You can see he has used metal brackets to set the stringer up nice and true.
Pretty solid stringer, a great starting point. You only get a good result by making sure you have a good starting point with stringer and frames all nice and true and that they all fit together well.
All Paulownia skins glued up and excess trimmed off.
He has glassed the under side of the deck and the bottom
A bit more strength added in the nose area as there isn't much thickness there when it is all shaped down.
Frames all set up and top rail band on
Extra blocks glued in for the goretex breather to be fitted later
More timber needed for the beefing up of the fin area.
He has trued everything up and made sure it lines up to the outline and that all the frames are level so as to not get any twist. And then he has glued the small pieces of wood on the ends of the frames to hold it all in place.
Glue it up , all hands on deck with the clamps and sand bags. You can only do this if you have everything lined up and in place and locked down and able to take the weight. Otherwise when you add the weight it will twist and distort the frames. Not good.
Deck on. Those small pieces of wood glued on the ends of the frames take the weight of the sand bags and hold everything in place as the glue goes off. Once the deck is on with all those glue points on all those frames , then it is very strong and not going anywhere. Put the time in to fit everything and check that it goes together without lots of effort in a dry run or two to make life easy for yourself. Have all your gear ready. Clamps ready and in easy reach. With this many you may need a spare set of hands as well. With paulownia be sure not to have tha clamps mark the top surface too much as you will have to sand it out. Line the sand bags down the middle of the board to hold the deck skin in place and lined up to your marks. Then clamp away.

Nobby the Japanese craftsman...

Nobuhito Ohkawa, is a Japanese craftsman in all senses of the word. He builds Paulownia boards with a passion and in a method he has created to craft beautiful boards as witnessed by the two he brought out to the wooden board day last August. All his timber for any one board is cut from the same tree and the board is built with all the grain going in the one direction to control the flex. A coat of epoxy resin is infused on the inside of the skins and a only a coat of varnish on the outside so as to not inhibit the natural flex of the chosen timbers. He is already booked to be here again this August . And is building new boards to showcase his talents.

Pato's new board ready to go off to the glasser...

Some solid wood to set the fin box into later.
Carbon fibre under the deck skin for some added strength
Looking good for the other side to go on
Some nice wood work skills here for the deck detail.

Paulownia for all the construction , good idea to save weight.

This is Craig's second board and sure has come out looking the goods. He has stepped it up on his first one . You learn so much with each project and can't wait to start the next. I know the feeling.

Wooden SUP from Texas

Troy Nixon from Austin Texas just biult ths 10ft 10" x 30" wide x 4.5" SUP from Paulownia and Redwood. She is a beast of a board and a big project well done. Thanks for sharing her with us Troy.

Big California swell brings out the best in the Simmons

Richard Kenvin winding her up to get in early , just as Bob had planned...

John Cherry sent me these great shots of Richard Kenvin letting the big 10ft Simmons do what it was made for. It's the 10ft reproduction board that JC and Terry Martin built a few years ago. Richard has some footage of Rasta riding it in his under production movie "Hydrodynamica.
Here is what JC has to say...
"I loaned Terry’s and my Simmons to RK about 3 weeks ago so he could ride it and do some filming.
These La Jolla Cove xxx waves were exactly what the Simmons was originally designed to ride. I don’t know anybody better to put her through her paces than RK .
It wasn’t the greatest angle on the cove shots, but I LOVE the take-off shot. It shows the Simmons ability to get in early and get headed a warp speed down the line.

Terry and I built the Simmons to ride, enjoy and share with the surf community.
RK says the Simm is absolutely an amazing board to ride. I’m Stoked!! "

Thanks guys for sharing and having made the board that has now created all this interest in the Simmons and Mini Simmons.I know there are a lot more of them being built this summer here in Aust.
