Byron Bay Surf Festival

Andrew Wells of Grown Surfboards will be holding a workshop / introduction to building a wooden surfboard at the new Byron Bay Surf Festval on :
Saturday October 22nd 4pm
Southern Cross Room – Byron Community Centre

The Grown Surfboards workshop will briefly cover the philosophy behind my surfboards and will cover the form and functionality of hollow timber surfboards. Then in more detail we will go through the hollow timber board building process using visual aids to show the various aspects of hollow timber surfboard construction. Will conclude the workshop with a Question and Answer session.

We love surfing and are passionate about our oceans and preserving them for the next generation of surfers. “Grown is all about turning a positive passion into a productive and ethical business” This love of surfing and responsibility to minimise our impact on the planet evolved into producing hand made boards from recycled and plantation grown timber.

Check this and other great activities on their website. Great to see a get together just to celebrate why we go go surfing - For Fun.

Andrew Wells from Grown Surfboards with another great board.

" Its a 6'4 fish, paulownia with cedar stringer and some camphour accent strips on the deck. Shane Martins had the airbrush out again and has done some beautiful koi fish on the bottom.

Look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks."
Andrew has built this fine board for the Wooden Board Day on the 8th of August

Old boards to new board

These old fence palings were coming off to be replaced and so Andrew Wells from Grown Surfboards just had an idea of what to do with them.
Cleaned up and through the thicknesser and this is what is uncovered . Beautiful Redgum.

Redgum deck with Paulownia rails and bottom makes for a great contrast.

You might just be looking at the neighbours fence a little differently from now on.

Andrew Wells from Grown Surfboards has ben busy.

Andrew is from Lennox Heads and makes a great looking board.

" Just thought I’d send you through a couple more pics of some boards I have just finished. The board with blue fins is a bit of a concept board for me, it’s got a big single concave hull running full length of the board and has been designed for down the line speed. I’m Itching to get it out for a test run."
A long wall at Lennox would be a nice test for any board I would say. Let us know how she goes Andrew.

Andrew Wells from Grown Surfboards is heading for the Fish Fry with some nice wooden numbers.

Andrew said " he has been making timber fish for the last year or so and has just started making a few boards for his mates…they all wanted to take them out for a ride and once they ride a timber fish they’re hooked! (pun intended!) So he has been knocking out a few boards for them, and he has recently set up a  website  www.grownsurfboards.com.au " So check out his boards and what he is doing. He is moving up to Lennox at the end of the month and will bring some boards to The Alley Fish Fry so if you are there check them out.
